Interessantes Programm zur pdf-Organisation:

I, Librarian ist ein kostenloser Service und funktioniert über einen externen Server (Apache): Man kann (scheinbar) beliebig viele PDF's von der eigenen Festplatte oder anderer Hardware hochladen und hier in Sammlungen speichern und organisieren (Zugang dann von allen Rechnern, auf denen das Programm installiert wird).
Mich interessiert v.a. eine gute advanced search function. Die hiesige ist nicht schlecht, aber die Suchfunktion erstreckt sich leider nicht auf den Volltext der PDF's! Die PDF wird über den Arcrobat Reader angezeigt oder über einen internen PDF-Viewer (der ist nicht besonders gut). Acrobat Reader kann aber nicht nach zwei (oder mehr) Ausdrücken suchen, die sich beide (mit einer bestimmten Distanz voneinander) in einem Dokument finden. Wenn ich z.B. nach "philosophy of mind" suchen wollte, dann ginge das mit dem Acrobat Reader nur, wenn ich genau diese Wortfolge eingebe. Es funktioniert hingegen nicht, wenn ich nur "philosophy" und "mind" eingebe.
Diese Funktion, nach Dokumenten zu suchen, in denen zwei oder mehrere Suchausdrücke vorkommen, die nicht unmittelbar aufeinanderfolgen, gibt es zwar in der advanced search function von I, Librarian - diese ist aber auf bestimmte Metadatenbereiche eingeschränkt, etwa das Abstract (hier ohne highlighting function, in der Titelsuche hingegen mit highlighting...).
Wer kennt einen PDF-manager, der über eine nutzerfreundlichere Suchfunktion verfügt?

... Die Bibliothek als Ort ist auch in Zukunft nicht gefährdet, selbst wenn die Regale und Bücher verschwinden, die sie einst ausmachten. Im digitalen Zeitalter ändert sich schlicht die Aufgabe der Bibliotheken: Nun bieten sie ihren Nutzern ein Arrangement des Wissens an. Das Lesen eines Buchs sei nicht länger als die kontemplative Versenkung in ein Buch zu verstehen, sondern als die Aufnahme des Wissens, seine Veränderung und erneute Bereitstellung. Die Bibliothek ist nun Ort, nicht Regal mit Büchern. Sie ist die Arbeit des Lesers mit Wissen, im Idealfall ohne Zensur und wirtschaftliche Interessen. So lange Wissen eine soziale Größe bleibt, schließt Schneider seinen Vortrag, so lange sind auch die Bibliotheken als Ort nicht gefährdet, selbst wenn die physischen Bücher weniger werden....

Historischer Katalog der Badischen Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe

Dieser Katalog wies bis 1942 die Bestände der Badischen Landesbibliothek nach. Im September 1942 wurde die Bibliothek durch einen Bombenangriff zerstört. Der gesamte Bestand, damals 360.000 Bände, wurde mit Ausnahme der bereits ausgelagerten Zimelien vernichtet. Nur der Katalog wurde gerettet. Er dient heute nicht mehr als Bestandsnachweis, sondern als Quelle wissenschaftlicher Forschung.

Bethlehem Digital History Project

Honored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as one of the "best online resources for education in the humanities", the Bethlehem Digital History Project provides Web access to digitized primary source materials, transcriptions, translations and contextual information relating to the early history of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 1741 – 1844.

One of the primary goals of this project is to encourage broad or specialized exploration of local, regional and national history. The Papers of Abraham Lincoln

The Papers of Abraham Lincoln is a long-term project dedicated to identifying, imaging, and publishing all documents written by or to Abraham Lincoln during his lifetime (1809-1865).  After locating the documents, project staff will prepare a high-resolution color digital image of each page.  Working from these electronic surrogates, project editors will create authoritative transcriptions of the documents, markup their structural features according to the guidelines developed by the Model Editions Partnership and the Text Encoding Initiative, and provide explanatory annotations.  The project will then publish the text files, linked to the graphic images of the originals, on a publicly accessible website.

Die zunehmende Digitalisierung von Informationen und deren Bereitstellung in bevorzugt digitalen Formen bringt jedoch eine hohe Technikabhängigkeit mit sich. Diese Technikabhängigkeit stellt heutige Gesellschaften hinsichtlich der Erhaltung und Überlieferung ihrer digitalen Hervorbringungen vor große und bislang weitestgehend ungelöste Probleme. Dennoch hat die Bearbeitung dieser grundlegenden Problemen und Fragestellungen in Deutschland und anderen europäischen Nationen erst in der letzten Dekade wirklich begonnen.
Nach Wildau (2008) und Köln (2010) kommt die Tagung »Technik und Kultur« dieses Jahr nach Karlsruhe und wird sich gemäß dem Titel »Digitalisierung und Bewahrung des digitalen kulturellen Erbes« den Problematiken, Fragen und Perspektiven der Bewahrung und Überlieferung des digitalen Erbes widmen. Die thematische Breite der eingereichten Beiträge reicht von theoretischen Beiträgen zu kulturwissenschaftlichen, antropologischen bzw. ethischen Fragestellungen der digitalen Überlieferung bis zu praktixnahen Beiträgen zur Digitalisierung sowie zur technischen und semantischen Erhaltung, und damit zur Dokumentation, Restauration, Speicherung und Archivierung digitaler Kunst- und Kulturobjekte in Museen und Archiven.[...]"

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)

The DPLA planning initiative grew out of an October 2010 meeting at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, which brought together over 40 representatives from foundations, research institutions, cultural organizations, government, and libraries to discuss best approaches to building a national digital library. In December 2010, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, generously supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, convened leading experts in libraries, technology, law, and education to begin work on this problem; a two-year process of intense grassroots community organization, beginning in October 2011 and hosted at the Berkman Center, will result in a realistic and detailed workplan for launching the DPLA, as well as unveiling of a prototype of the system with specially digitized materials.
The vision of a national digital library has been circulating among librarians, scholars, educators, and private industry representatives since the early 1990s, but it has not yet materialized. Efforts led by a range of organizations, including the Library of Congress, HathiTrust, and the Internet Archive, have successfully built resources that provide books, images, historical records, and audiovisual materials to anyone with Internet access. Many universities, public libraries, and other public-spirited organizations have digitized materials that could be brought together under the frame of the DPLA, but these digital collections often exist in silos. Compounding this problem are disparate technical standards, disorganized and incomplete metadata, and a host of legal issues. No project has yet succeeded in bringing these different viewpoints, experiences, and collections together with leading technical experts and the best of private industry to find solutions to these complex challenges. Users have neither coherent access to these materials nor tools to use them in new and exciting ways, and institutions have no clear blueprint for creating a shared infrastructure to serve the public good. The time is right to launch an ambitious project to realize the great promise of the Internet for the advancement of sharing information and of using technology to enable new knowledge and discoveries in the United States.

Hungarian Digital Image Library

The Hungarian Digital Image Library has been developed by the National Széchényi Library in collaboration with 48 Hungarian libraries in 2008-2009. The development of the continuously expanding digital image collection was funded by the Renaissance Program Office and the Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture.

Our aim is to provide access to well-known and less known images within and beyond country borders. The collection interest of the image library apart from the National Széchényi Library’s images comprises digital Hungarica documents descending from different collections, for instance codices, regional history picture collections, postcards, posters and other digital images (like scanned manuscripts).

 

The representative selection has been established for educational, cultural and scientific purposes. The creative use and reuse of the digital images will be supported from time to time with new special services.

By collecting and providing digital images from different collections users get an overview of the cultural heritage preserved in the libraries, and the images can be freely used for learning, acquisition of knowledge and entertainment. Commercial use of the images requires prior permission from the rights holder libraries.

La Commissione delle Comunità Europee, visto il trattato che istituisce la Comunità europea ed in particolare l’articolo 211, raccomanda agli Stati membri di assumere iniziative rivolte a valorizzare, per mezzo di internet, il potenziale del patrimonio culturale europeo e definisce le biblioteche digitali come un aspetto fondamentale dell’im¬pegno ad ottimizzare l’utilizzo delle nuove tecnologie dell’informazione per la crescita economica e la qualità della vita dei cittadini europei. La digitalizzazione del materiale contenuto nelle biblioteche, negli archivi e nei musei rappresenta infatti la condizione per consentire ai cittadini di tutta Europa di accedervi on line e di utilizzarlo a fini di studio, lavoro o svago.

Nel 2001, nell’ambito della III Conferenza Nazionale delle Biblioteche, la Direzione Generale per i Beni Librari e gli Istituti Culturali del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali ha dato il via al progetto denominato "Biblioteca Digitale Italiana" (BDI) che, in sintonia con analoghi progetti europei ed extraeuropei, mira a promuovere e coordinare le attività di digitalizzazione del patrimonio bibliografico e archivistico italiano.

La Biblioteca Panizzi, consapevole di svolgere nella comunità un ruolo fondamentale sia come agenzia di informazione sia come luogo della memoria collettiva, intende inserirsi in questo contesto con una propria strategia di intervento, mirata in particolare a valorizzare il patrimonio di sapere e di conoscenza che la comunità reggiana ha saputo esprimere nel corso della sua storia.
