"Mit der Gründung des Bistums Bamberg im Jahre 1007 durch den späteren Kaiser Heinrich II. (973–1024) gelangten sukzessive wertvolle Handschriften in die Bamberger Dombibliothek und das Stift St. Stephan. Diese wurden entweder aus bestehenden Bibliotheken nach Bamberg geschenkt oder durch Heinrich II. gezielt für seine Bistumsgründung in Auftrag gegeben.

Mit der Säkularisation 1802/03 gingen die Bibliotheken der Stifte und Klöster des ehemaligen Hochstifts Bamberg in das Eigentum des bayerischen Staates über und wurden fast vollständig in die Kurfürstliche Bibliothek, die heutige Staatsbibliothek Bamberg, überführt.

Alle Verheerungen der letzten 1.000 Jahre durch Kriege und andere Katastrophen überstand die Bibliothek Heinrichs II. im Kern unbeschadet, so dass sich im Bestand der Staatsbibliothek Bamberg noch heute 165 Codices und Handschriftenfragmente aus der Zeit bis 1024, dem Todesjahr Heinrichs II., befinden. Damit verfügt die Staatsbibliothek Bamberg über die weltweit einzige, weitgehend geschlossen erhaltene kaiserliche Bibliothek des frühen Hochmittelalters. Zwei dieser Handschriften, die Bamberger Apokalypse (Msc.Bibl.140) und der Kommentar zum Hohen Lied und zum Buch Daniel (Msc.Bibl.22), wurden 2004 in das Weltdokumentenerbe der UNESCO aufgenommen.[...]"

7. “Digital Libraries” have started their life as an answer to opportunities created by a specific stage of technical development. Where are they now, between Computer Science and the Digital Humanities?

"TKDL is a collaborative project between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology and Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and is being implemented at CSIR. An inter-disciplinary team of Traditional Medicine (Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Yoga) experts, patent examiners, IT experts, scientists and technical officers are involved in creation of TKDL for Indian Systems of Medicine. The project TKDL involves documentation of the traditional knowledge available in public domain in the form of existing literature related to Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Yoga, in digitized format in five international languages which are English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish. Traditional Knowledge Resource Classification (TKRC), an innovative structured classification system for the purpose of systematic arrangement, dissemination and retrieval has been evolved for about 25,000 subgroups against few subgroups that was available in earlier version of the International Patent Classification (IPC), related to medicinal plants, minerals, animal resources, effects and diseases, methods of preparations, mode of administration, etc."

"At the Huygens Instituut KNAW (a research institute for text edition and textual scholarship of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) a digital tool has been developed for the making of text-editions and for textual research in online working environments: eLaborate. In February 2009 a new version of this tool became available. In eLaborate, researchers can create websites in which they can work, individually or with a group of collaborators, on the transcription and edition of a text. They can use any personal computer that is connected to the internet. Central in the working environments are scans or digital photos of the source material. The edition-in-progress can be shown to other editors, collaborators or invited readers at any given moment. When such a digitally born edition enters a phase of completeness, it can be launched in a newly styled user-friendly website, which is, in principle, freely accessible. This website includes better navigation and a simple search engine. The first edition in this new series, Carolingian Scholarship. Glosses on Martianus Capella, was launched in November 2008, and in the improved online environment in February 2009."
